Chapter 12 Map Quiz

On Wednesday, June 9, we took a short map quiz about the Civil War and Reconstruction. Students in Period 9 did not take the quiz, but all other students must make up the quiz if they missed it.

You don’t need to memorize anything for the quiz, but you should know what states were part of the CSA during the Civil War and which states were the “border states” during the Civil War.

(CW 12.3) Essay Outline – End of Reconstruction

The final classwork assignment for the year involves preparing an outline for the Chapter 12 test essay.

The essay question is: Why does Reconstruction come to an end in 1877?

For the small projects, we looked at examples of positive things that took place during Reconstruction. However, after the Compromise of 1877, most of this comes to an end. Explain why this is, using three reasons to support your argument.

A complete outline will include: a thesis statement, three supporting reasons, and three supporting details per reason. An outline should look something like this…

  • Thesis Statement
  • Reason #1
    • Supporting Evidence #1
    • Supporting Evidence #2
    • Supporting Evidence #3
  • Reason #2
    • Supporting Evidence #1
    • Supporting Evidence #2
    • Supporting Evidence #3
  • Reasons #3
    • Supporting Evidence #1
    • Supporting Evidence #2
    • Supporting Evidence #3

(CW 12.2) Examples of Reconstruction

In class today, we viewed presentations about the effects of reconstruction. Each group illustrated one effect of Reconstruction and then explained if it was a positive or negative effect – and why.

The classwork assignment for the day was an exit card. You were to write down three examples of positive effects of Reconstruction. This information was based on the presentations from class.

If you were absent, you will have to do something slightly different.

Explain three positive effects of Reconstruction (look in Ch. 12, Sec. 2). For each one, write a full paragraph in which you summarize the effect and explain why it is a good thing.

The full written assignment should therefore be three individual paragraphs.

(Project 12.1) Illustrating Examples of Reconstruction

The small project for Chapter 12 is to illustrate an example of something going on during the period of Reconstruction.

For a topic, choose one of the red sub-headings in Chapter 12, Section 2.  For example, “African Americans as Voters” or “Public Works Programs.”

Read the small section, create a one-page illustration to summarize the topic, and then write up a short explanation (1 to 2 paragraphs) explaining your picture and the topic.

(CW 12.1) Reconstruction Timeline

The first assignment for Chapter 12 is to create a timeline of events relating to Reconstruction.

  • Skim through Chapter 12 (Sections 1, 2, and 3).
  • Identify 12 events that are relevant to the reconstruction of the country after the Civil War. Organize these events onto a timeline.
  • Choose 4 of these events, read about them in more depth, and write a short summary (1 – 2 paragraphs) for each one.

Chapter 11 Take Home Test (Period 5)

Students in Period 5 should complete the Chapter 11 Take Home Test

Chapter 11 Test Review

Download and look over the Ch 11 Test Review. The test will be Friday, May 28. As usual, you can produce an outline of the essay and use it and/or any notes you have while writing the essay in class.

(CW 11.4) Paraphrasing the Emancipation Proclamation

The assignment for today and tomorrow is to read the text of the Emancipation Proclamation and paraphrase the document into your own words. At the end, tomorrow, we will discuss the document a bit and make sure that everyone comprehends its effect.

You can find a copy of the document here.
